The degree of PhD in European studies is taken by the submission of a thesis
(of 60,000-90,000 words) on a topic approved by the director of the centre.
Candidates with an honours BA with at least an H2A, a Masters Qualifying with a
research component with a grade of H2A, or an MA (H2A equivalent) in European
studies or a relevant discipline, are eligible for admission. Candidature is
normally three years full-time or six years part-time study. For further

Candidates for the degree of MA will proceed to the degree by coursework and
research (66 per cent) or by 100 per cent research. The minimum requirement for
entry to the program is an honours degree or equivalent with a grade of H2A or
better in European studies or a relevant discipline. The 100% research degree
is normally completed in two years of full-time candidature. The degree by
coursework and research can be completed in one year full-time or two years
part-time.
On completing this course students should be able to show their acquaintance with extensive readings in their field; demonstrate that they can originate and pursue research projects independently; discuss effectively and defend appropriately their ideas, both orally and in writing; display a comprehensive understanding of significant aspects of European culture, politics, and society; have completed in their thesis a significant and original contribution to knowledge in the area in which they are working.
The program will be as follows: two of the following eight-point subjects or other subjects approved by the director of the centre (but candidates with no knowledge of a European language must take EUM5000.08 Language) plus a thesis of 25,000-35,000 words.
