Objectives Students should develop an understanding of the major theoretical approaches and topics associated with language contact studies and apply them to the case of Japanese language.

Synopsis This subject focuses upon communication in native situations and includes treatment of Japanese language contact and language change in an Australian context. Theoretical approaches to studies of languages in contact, including network analysis, transference, code-switching and bilingualism will be covered.

Assessment (8 points) Essay (3500 words): 60% -Review (2500 words): 40%
Assessment (12 points) Essay (5000 words): 60% -Literature review (4000 words): 40%
