Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the differences between writing for print and writing for broadcast; a grasp of the skills required to become a competent broadcast interviewer; a range of practices involved in radio production through practical instruction and critical analysis; teamwork and co-operation in radio production; skills in recording; editing and producing radio news and current affairs stories; an understanding of planning, directing and producing radio news and current affairs programs; familiarity with the responsibilities of journalists in the representation of age, gender and cultural diversity in news and current affairs stories/programs.
Synopsis This subject will explore the role of radio news and current affairs in society. Issues of the production of meaning by news construction and editing will be considered. The subject will address the issues of news production and journalism field work in radio. Students will be instructed in the use of audio recording equipment and digital editing.
Assessment Written excercise (500 words): 10% Interview (60 seconds): 15% Journal (700 words): 15% Radio news stories (2 each, 60 seconds): 20% Radio current affairs story (5 minutes): 25% Critical essay (1000 words): 15%
