Jewellery/metals practice and theory 2

6 points - 6 studio hours and 6 independent study hours per week - Second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: APA1501 - Corequisites: APA1604

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should be proficient in a broad range of working practices, materials and machinery in the context of jewellery/metalsmithing; understand the cultural, social and historical issues of the discipline; understand the contributions that theoretical and cultural contexts of contemporary art theory and practice make to the discipline; be able to formulate and communicate opinions and responses to designed objects; understand and be proficient in applying health and safety procedures associated with studio practice.

Synopsis This subject extends the range of critical and practical skills in the discipline. It focuses on research and exploration in the medium, with greater emphasis placed on non-traditional material and processes such as anodised aluminium, titanium and appropriate plastics. Students are encouraged to critically review, debate and explore issues of contemporary art and design practice in general, as well as those specific to jewellery. Focus on the exploration of design and fabrication through problem-solving projects fosters individual opinions and responses and assists in the developments of a personal visual language.
