Jewellery/metals materials and technology 2

3 points - 2 studio hours and 4 independent study hours per week - Second semester - Caulfield - Prerequisites: None - Corequisites: APA1502

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should have an appreciation of the nature of metals, their properties and uses; have a working knowledge of relevant materials and their chemical and physical properties; understand a variety of production methods used in the studio environment; be able to assess the appropriateness of production techniques and their suitability for use in specific situations; have an awareness of the historic use of materials in jewellery and metalsmithing; develop a familiarity with the technical language of jewellery and metalsmithing; have developed a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health and safety requirements and practices.

Synopsis This subject extends the theoretical framework commenced in APA1603 to complement the projects studied in APA1604. It introduces students to traditional and contemporary materials and technologies in the many associated disciplines and industries which are applicable and appropriate in the production of contemporary jewellery and metalsmithing. Technology workshops assist students in developing technical skills and language. Students are encouraged to experiment with materials, processes, forms and to appreciate in what ways these determine the finished result.
