Objectives The aim of this subject is to introduce students to some of the basic physics that underpins a modern university physics subject. At the successful conclusion of this subject students will be able to understand a range of fundamental concepts from the core units of `Advanced quantum physics', `Nuclear physics', `Relativistic mechanics and fields' and `Solid state physics'; apply a series of theoretical techniques within this subject core; extend mastery of this core to related subject areas of knowledge of particular interest to the student; write up short reports on topics in theoretical physics; present a short seminar on a topic in theoretical physics.
Synopsis This subject can be taken together with another twelve-point third-year subject, including PHS3062. The subject consists of five core units of `Advanced quantum physics', `Nuclear physics', `Solid state physics', `Relativistic mechanics and fields' and a twelve-hour seminar program unit. The remaining elective units will normally be chosen from physics units listed but approval may be granted for a subject or unit from another department.
