The Graduate Diploma in Information Management is offered with specialisations in librarianship, teacher librarianship and record-keeping. It comprises eight coursework subjects and may be taken on campus, by distance education or by mixed delivery mode. It may be undertaken in one year of full-time study or in two or three years of part-time study.

Specialisations provide professional qualifications in librarianship, teacher librarianship or recordkeeping. Recognition for the librarianship and teacher librarianship streams is being sought from the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), and for the recordkeeping stream from the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA).

Course objectives

The objectives of the Graduate Diploma in Information Management are:

• to educate information professionals to manage information in all media to meet the social and business needs of the community for information services and products;
• to provide professional courses in librarianship, teacher librarianship and recordkeeping grounded both in the humanities and social sciences and in contemporary information and communication technology, which is transforming practice in the information management professions;
• to deliver quality professional courses that teach the theory and practice of librarianship, teacher librarianship and recordkeeping in accordance with the accreditation requirements of the relevant professional associations and the needs of the workplace;
• to produce independent, self-sufficient professionals able to work in a range of roles, as an employee, team member, contractor or self-employed practitioner.

Admission requirements

Applicants for admission to the Graduate Diploma in Information Management (Librarianship), Graduate Diploma in Information Management (Teacher Librarianship) and Graduate Diploma in Information Management (Recordkeeping) must have qualified for a bachelors degree at Monash University or at another tertiary institution approved by the faculty. (Note that professional recognition as a teacher librarian is contingent on the candidate also gaining a teaching qualification, but a teaching qualification is not a prerequisite for admission to the teacher librarianship special stream.)

Special entry provisions are also in place to enable admission into the Graduate Diploma in Information Management (Librarianship), Graduate Diploma in Information Management (Teacher Librarianship) and Graduate Diploma in Information Management (Recordkeeping) to those without formal tertiary qualifications who can establish that they have the foundation required for postgraduate studies in these fields.

Fees for Australian residents

In 1998 the course fee is $8000 for full-time enrolment, or pro rata per subject for part-time.

Duration

The course may be completed in a minimum of one year full-time or eighteen months part-time.
