Objectives At the completion of this subject students should be able to understand the algebra and geometry of complex numbers; become skilled at calculations involving complex numbers; solve some first order differential equations and second order linear differential equations; calculate partial derivatives, differentials, gradient vectors and directional derivatives; find local extreme values and saddle points for functions of several variables; understand the basic properties of sequences and series and appreciate the role of series in estimation of functions; calculate Taylor and Fourier series; use computer algebra packages to help solve problems in calculus.
Synopsis Complex numbers. Differential equations. Differential calculus of more than one variable. Sequences and series: Taylor series, Fourier series. Further use of the computer algebra package DERIVE.
Assessment Examination: 70%
