Objectives On completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of the internet and world wide web; acquired the skills to write HTML pages and forms which can interact with server-based applications and databases; an understanding of basic design principles in presenting information in a web page environment; an awareness of the legal and ethical issues in web publications.

Synopsis Introduction to networks. The structure and genealogy of the internet and the world wide web. Navigating the web. Hypermedia. Information retrieval. SGML and HTML. Elements of web pages: text, graphics, audio, video. Manipulating text: formatting, tables, frames. Use of graphics: vector and bitmap images, methods of image compression, digitising images, incorporating images into web applications. Audio and video: audio and video capture, issues in digitisation and incorporation of multimedia elements into web pages. Processing of web forms. Clients communicating with server applications. Writing applications for the client end, communication with server scripts and databases for processing. Issues in platform independent client aplications. Legal and ethical considerations of web-based publications. Data security in web applications. Elements of visual design
