Objectives Understanding the properties and application of programmable logic controllers. Familiarity with the physical phenomena utilised in sensors and transducers. Use of operational amplifiers in signal conditioning circuits for various sensor devices.

Synopsis Computer interfacing. The programmable logic controller, its facilities and limitations. Operation of the CPU and I/O modules. Introduction to various aspects of analog and digital electronic systems. The ideal voltage amplifier and its properties. The operational amplifier and its applications. Analog to digital converters and their usage in interfacing analog signals to digital systems. The properties and characteristics of various types of transducers. Aspects of the fabrication and design of integrated circuits.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 50%
* Practical work, laboratory work and assignments: 50%
