Objectives Understanding the properties and application of tuned amplifiers as applicable to communications equipment such as radio and television. Familiarity with coupled tuned circuits and their advantages in wide band RF applications. Appreciation of the switching performance of electronic components in high speed logic circuits and also high power devices as used in power electronics.

Synopsis Single and double tuned circuits. Tuned amplifier design including practical aspects such as neutralisation and impedance matching. The operation and design of various types of oscillators. Class C operation of oscillators and tuned amplifiers. Charge control models of diodes and bipolar transistors. The properties of real logic circuits in terms of the charge control model. Introduction to switched mode power supplies and their specialised component requirements.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 60%
* Laboratory work and small project: 40%
