Objectives This subject will introduce students to the principles and some applications of electromagnetic energy conversion. Applications will include electromagnetic devices, transformers and DC machines.
Synopsis Principles of magnetic circuit analysis. Inductance. Magnetisation, hysteresis and losses in ferromagnetic materials. Permanent magnets. Electromagnetic energy conversion process. Field energy. Electromagnetic force and torque. Theory of operation, equivalent circuit, performance and testing of transformers. Per-unit system. Three-phase transformers. Principles of operation, performance and control of DC motors and generators. Introduction to 3-phase AC machines, rotating magnetic field, synchronous speed and slip.

Assessment Examination: 80%
* Assignments and practical reports: 20%
