Electronics and control systems I

E M Cherry and W A Brown

5 points
* 39 lectures, 13 tutorials and 18 laboratory hours
* Second semester
* Clayton
* Prerequisites: ECS2310 and PHS2081
* Corequisites: MAT2920

Objectives The student is expected to gain an understanding of the principles of operation of semiconductor devices, the application of these devices to electronic circuits, the concepts of feedback and feedforward control and the potential for instability in closed-loop systems.

Synopsis Electronics. Volt-amp characteristics of semiconductor devices. The basis of amplification: quiescent and signal quantities. Biasing: coupling and bypass capacitors. The linear approximation and small-signal concept: equivalent circuits, mid-band calculations, operational amplifiers. Large-signal circuits: logic gates. Control systems. Dynamic response of linear systems. Reasons for feedback control. Poles and zeros. Stability of feedback systems. Control design using root locus.

Assessment Examination (3 hours) and tests: 80%
* Laboratory work: 20%
