Objectives The student is expected to gain an understanding of the basic principles of quantum physics and statistical and solid state physics necessary for the foundations of various aspects of electronic devices.

Synopsis Introductory quantum mechanics; application to some simple systems. Band theory of solids. Introduction to statistical physics; Fermi-Dirac, Bose Einstein and Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions. Metals and semiconductors; the pn junction. Thermal radiation, noise. Lasers.

Assessment Examination: 90%
