J M Williams

4 points
* 26 lecture hours and 26 tutorial hours
* Second semester
* Caulfield
* Prerequisites: CVE2121

Objectives The student is expected to develop skills in the calculation of beam deflections and to further an understanding of beam and column behaviour.

Synopsis Beam theory, shear centre, skew bending, composite beams, combined stress. Deflections by integration of the governing differential equation, moment area method. Columns, elastic buckling, end conditions, Euler load, effective length, slenderness ratio design formulae. Application of theory of elasticity, equilibrium and compatibility, plane stress, plane strain.
