Objectives The student is expected to consolidate and extend the knowledge of stress and strain relationships for axial and flexural loading gained in level-one studies.

Synopsis Review of beam reactions, bending moment, thrust and shear force diagrams extension to statically determinate frames. Beam theory: flexural, direct and shear stresses, torsion, shear centre, combined stress. Elementary stress analysis; normal and shear stress, stress and strain at a point; Mohr's circle, principal stresses, Hooke's law, general theory of elasticity.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 80%
* Assignments: 20%
