Objectives Increased general knowledge of steel building construction. Ability to analyse steel structures and dimension their components and connections according to Australian Standards using commercial computer packages and design aids.

Synopsis Design, construction and testing of a model steel structure. Research and seminar presentation of an aspect of steel construction. Steel structure systems. Stability of frames. Second-order effects. Dimensioning of columns and laterally unrestrained beams. Plate girders.

Assessment Examinations: 50%
* Practical work and seminar participation: 50%
