Objectives A knowledge of the criteria governing design of structures and of steel and concrete as construction materials. An understanding of the behaviour of basic steel and concrete members. An ability to choose appropriate sizes for simple members in steel and concrete and bolt and weld sizes for simple connections in steel.
Synopsis General: structural systems and loads; limit-state design philosophy. Steel: tension members; laterally supported beams; axially-loaded columns; connections. Reinforced concrete: properties of concrete and reinforcement; service load behaviour; ultimate flexural strength of rectangular beams, tee beams, and slabs.
Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 70%
* Practical
