Objectives To develop an understanding of the way in which civil engineers investigate and solve problems, including the need to understand the environment in which the problem is embedded; an ability to acquire knowledge in the pursuit of solving engineering problems; knowledge and skills related to structural analysis and design, eg beams, trusses, footings, traffic and pedestrian flows; communication skills, in both oral and written forms; computer skills.

Synopsis The subject allows students to experience the identification of a civil engineering problem, leading to a simple design. This will include elements of traffic, environmental, structural and geotechnical engineering. Specific topics include problem identification, traffic and pedestrian issues, aesthetics, economics, freebody diagrams, static equilibrium, reactions, limit state concepts, truss analysis, shear force and bending moment diagrams, buckling and deflections, foundation design. This is a problem-based learning subject. Students work in small groups with a tutor to identify their learning needs in the solution of the problem.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 40%
* Assignments and tests: 60%
* Students must pass both assignment and examination components.
