The Graduate Diploma in Operations Management has been designed to provide executives with key manufacturing and service management knowledge and skills. The graduate diploma emphasises internationally competitive practices and blends modern theory with practical applications drawn in part from students' workplace experience.

Course objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

• demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of excellent operations managers;
• understand the use of advanced technologies and methodologies to gain and maintain a strategic advantage;
• use operations management concepts and skills to enable their companies to become internationally competitive;
• manage cross-functional teams and projects and manage change;
• understand new business, environmental and social responsibilities;
• understand the opportunities and challenges for Australian manufacturing and service companies.

Admission requirements

Applicants require a pass degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution plus a minimum of three years relevant employment experience or an executive certificate from this faculty with an average grade of credit or above.

Fees

This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should consult the Department of Management as to the 1998 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Credit for work done elsewhere

Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of four credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of study. Please refer to the course director for further details.

Mode of offering

Evening classes are offered on-campus at the Caulfield campus.

Duration

The Graduate Diploma in Operations Management is normally completed in four semesters of part-time study. This course may also be completed over three consecutive semesters including a summer semester.

Course structure

Core subjects

Six subjects shall be completed from the following compulsory core subjects:

• MGF9510 Manufacturing business strategies
• MGF9520 Manufacturing management technologies
• AFF9540 Finance for advanced manufacturing
• MGF9550 People development and management
• MGF9571 Research project (2 units)

• MGF9581 Overseas study tour (2 units)

Elective subjects

An additional two subjects shall be completed from the following subject list:

• MGF9530 Innovation in manufacturing management
• MGF9560 Manufacturing systems integration
• MGF9720 Managing in a changing environment
• MKF9780 Marketing concepts and strategies
• MGF9880 Managing quality and productivity
• MGF9011 An elective from the Graduate Diploma in Business Management

Progression to further studies

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Operations Management with an average grade of credit or above may apply for admission to the Master of Management (Operations Management).
