* Prerequisite: A first-year sequence in philosophy and two 8-point second-year philosophy subjects including at least one of PHL2110, PHL2130 or PHL2170. A basic competence in logic is required.

Objectives By the end of the subject students should have a grasp of the major distinctive approaches that have dominated philosophy in the English-speaking world during the twentieth century. Students who successfully complete the subject will be in a position to appreciate the historical background of contemporary philosophy.

Synopsis The subject will deal with philosophical problems concerning modality and some issues in the metaphysics of individuals, properties, relations, change, events and fate. A large part of the subject will be recent articles which will be made available, and there will be ample opportunity for seminar discussions.

Assessment Two essays (3000 words each): 50% each
* One essay may optionally be replaced by a 3-hour examination
* Satisfactory participation in student-initiated discussions will be required.
