Orchestral, choral and chamber performance and repertoire

* Prerequisites: Consultation with department to ascertain eligibility to enrol in this subject for 4 points as well as audition, or pass in MUS2510 and MUS2520.

Objectives Upon successful completion this subject students should have investigated specific and representative works in the repertoire for either the symphonic wind ensemble and the orchestra, or the choir and the chamber ensemble, and developed a basis for identifying elements of orchestral playing such as balance, intonation, style and appropriateness of performance, based on the study of relevant literature.

Synopsis (i) Orchestral, choral and chamber rehearsals and concert performance of selected works; and (ii) an historical and theoretical study of the relevant orchestral repertoire. Non BMus/BPA students may fulfil the requirements of this subject without chamber performance and with extra weighting in orchestral/choral performance. Note: different works from different periods are studied each semester.

Assessment: Written assignment (2500 words): 25%
* Concert performance (20 minutes chamber ensemble in addition to large ensemble): 75%

Objectives Upon successful completion this subject students should have investigated specific and representative works in the repertoire for either the symphonic wind ensemble and the orchestra, or the choir and the chamber ensemble, and developed a basis for identifying elements of orchestral playing such as balance, intonation, style and appropriateness of performance, based on the study of relevant literature. Additionally, a detailed comparative study with other relevant repertoire from the same period will be undertaken.
