Koorie studies I

* Prerequisites: Full first year with one of ANY, HSY, GES, ABS11, ABS12, PLT, LIN or SCY

Objectives To expand further on the topic of the lectures, to conduct discussion and debates, to remedy the ignorance that students may have in regard to Koorie/Aboriginal Australia; for the students to establish a basic understanding and keen awareness of Koorie/Aboriginal culture, history, lifestyles and of related issues. The lectures and tutorials provide a starting point for further studies and research.

Synopsis In this subject students will be presented with an overview of Australia's geographic environment and the Koorie economy prior to European contact. Particular examination will be made of Koorie religion, lifestyle and kinship system as they applied prior to the arrival of the British. The post-contact period, the effects on the Koorie economy and changes occasioned by the cultural contact will provide students with a background to KRS2020 (Koorie studies II).

Assessment Written work (3000 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 40%
* Tutorial paper and written summary (1000 words): 10%
* Attendance and participation: 10%
