Intermediate Korean, part 1

Objectives A principal objective of this subject is to have students acquire social and cultural proficiency in Korean. They should develop the ability in speaking and listening to comprehend enough to handle most everyday social situations, such as asking and talking about educational background, describing jobs, and asking and talking about everyday topics. In listening, they should start understanding expressions of different registers. In reading, they should be able to read highly simplified texts from magazines and newspapers, and in writing, they should be able to write a personal letter on simple everyday topics or a simple report on an everyday event. They should start understanding, in reading and listening, expressions that require knowledge of cultural and social aspects of Korean society.

Synopsis The aim of this subject is to achieve a deeper understanding of contemporary Korean language. Emphasis will be on active oral and writing skills and on sociocultural aspects of communication.

Assessment Examinations (4 hours): 40%
* Continuous assessment (oral and written class work, home work, tests): 60%
