Objectives On successful completion of this subjects students should be familiar with the main actors, debates, structural developments and conceptual and analytical models of international relations.

Synopsis The subject provides an historical approach to the study of international relations. The focus of the subject will be upon the evolution of international behaviours and the developments of theories of international relations. The subject will offer the following areas of study: the emergence of great powers; the balance of power experiments; the emergence of diplomacy and foreign policy; the use of conflict resolution and force as instruments of policy; the sources of power; cooperation in international affairs; and the emergence of global systems in international relations.

Assessment Essay one (1500 words): 30%
* Essay two (2500 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 30%
