* Prerequisites: Social welfare students, all first-level subjects plus GSC2303; community studies minor, GSC1301 and GSC1801 or equivalents

Objectives The student will acquire a holistic view of community, as well as an understanding of how the wider structural forces, social political, organisational, economic and ideological impact on communities, so that their practice will reflect this understanding. Students will learn skills to assess and apply an appropriate strategic response, and evaluate the outcome.

Synopsis The subject focuses on community and the theory and practice of community development. This includes analysis of community needs, community ownership of problems and solutions, notions of participation, and universality and marginality, and planning and implementing appropriate community intervention strategies.

Assessment Assignment: 60%
