Objectives Students must complete both parts one and two (CHI1480) in order to develop the ability to speak Mandarin fluently and accurately; the ability to transcribe Chinese characters in pinyin; the oral/aural ability for formal and informal modes of communication across a range of social and business contexts; the ability to write formal correspondence using appropriate business business vocabulary; a knowledge of mainland Chinese business practices.
Synopsis Mandarin: (1) phonetic system and phonology; (2) the pinyin romanisation system; (3) the simplified character system.
Assessment Weekly oral/aural exercise: 40%
