Objectives Upon completion of the subject students will have undertaken an in depth study of the heterogeneous nature of Egyptian culture during the rule of the Macedonian Ptolemies and Rome, with particular emphasis on multi-culturalism.

Synopsis The subject examines the profound changes the culture of ancient Egypt underwent during the period from 332 BCE to the end of the fourth century CE. It will examine the interaction between the Greek-speaking elite and the indigenous population, and will draw upon and analyse a wide range of sources, from the archaeological to the papyrological and literary. It includes a study of the advent of christianity in Egypt.
