DESIGN DISCOURSE 3

Objectives On successful completion of this subject, students should understand design as a system of communication; be able to use sophisticated research skills and strategies; understand and explore audience and client issues; critically analyse messages to understand the informational content of the message and how it is ordered; understand basic aspects of the complex social and cultural implications of design; question, expand and challenge what design is; be able to give an oral presentation confidently, clearly and intelligently.

Synopsis This unit covers areas common to both VCO2407 and VCO3408 in increasing depth and complexity. Students develop and undertake independent research. The physical presentation of the research offers students the opportunity to explore areas of interest in practice such as digital imaging, photomedia, illustration, two and three-dimensional design. Students work independently with their progress monitored by the lecturer. Research presented to the class for formal critiquing also offers the opportunity for peer review. Research projects are accompanied by a detailed journal which outlines the research methodology.
