Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should nurture and articulate a personal aesthetic; understand basic aspects of the relationship between form and communication; analyse the relationship between written and visual language in order to understand the dynamics and intentions of communication; be able to engage and integrate critical approaches to design research in their work; consider how to exploit theoretical pathways connecting visual form and cultural content; be familiar with basic design research and its connection with historical methodology.

Synopsis Students further develop and explore knowledge and skills acquired in VCO2407. Through projects and oral presentations, students respond to ideas and observations developed from a range of areas of study. The areas of study focus on the designers role within society. It explores and questions the ability of design to critique itself; it asks if design can ever use its own strategies to represent critical or subversive thought and hence investigate political and social change. The projects are formulated to provide concrete opportunities for students to explore and develop areas of personal interest through independent research.
