Objectives On successful completion of this unit students should have an advanced practical and critical understanding of photographic practice and its many spatial and political contexts; understand and be able to apply photographic processes, techniques and images to a major body of work; be able to produce a major body of work which demonstrates advanced technique integrally linked with ambitious ideas; possess critical opinions concerning the `stylistic fingerprinting' in the photographic media and have the ability to cultivate it or reject such concepts from an informal position; have critical insight into the conceptual and professional demands of contemporary practice and the relevant theoretical `positioning' of such practice in the contemporary critical literature.
Synopsis This subject focuses on the production of a major body of work demonstrating a critical and topical engagement within a contemporary art and design context. Students pursue photography as a specialised discipline or as an applied discipline, through an interdisciplinary approach with other studio areas. Students conceive, propose and realise a major body of self-directed work. In addition to the creative project, students define, research and articulate their work through an accompanying research paper. Students are involved in the ongoing critique, analysis and assessment of the project.
