* Prerequisites: GVA2113

Objectives By the completion of this subject students are expected to have demonstrated that they have a working general knowledge of historical and contemporary concepts related to their own work; that they have established a conceptual framework for their own work; that they have attempted to consolidate and resolve technical processes relevant to their work; that they are able to document and discuss the above; that they have a high level of independence with regard to researching ideas and source material; and that there is a close conceptual correlation between the drawings and paintings they produce.

Synopsis Students will undertake a set project throughout the semester. The project is primarily designed to allow the students to place into a broader context the individual concepts of their work. Therefore theoretical and historical research will be undertaken in relation to aspects of painting such as metaphor, myth, narrative, fantasy, sign and symbol. This research will be fully documented in the journal in conjunction with a discussion of its relevance to each student's personal concerns within his or her work. Students are expected to complete a minimum of five finished paintings and related studies, a finished drawing folio, and documentation in the form of a journal.
