Monash Student Association is the organisation which is the recognised means of communication between Clayton students and the academic and administrative authorities of the university.
All students have access to a number of student services and activities provided by MSA, and to the representative body. MSA works actively towards improving your lot as a student, not just in your lectures, pracs and examination halls, but also on issues at State and Federal levels which affect Monash students.
The Monash Student Board is the governing body of MSA, and can direct the elected office-bearers of MSA.
Within MSA there are many committees with which you may become involved, and there are student representatives on Union and university committees, including the University Council (the governing body of the University), Academic Board (which advises the University Council on all academic matters) and Union Board.
All student representatives are elected by the student body. If you want to identify your student representative on any committee, contact the MSA office. If you are interested in standing for any position, inquire at MSA about nominating for elections. Most elections are held in September each year.
MSA provides many services for students, including car pooling, child care subsidies Austudy advice, representation and advice in academic appeals, and advocacy.
MSA Activities presents bands and functions for all students throughout the year. It often puts on free performances at lunchtime, and runs several Union nights featuring well-known local and international acts at affordable prices.
The Monash Short Courses Centre, funded and managed by MSA, runs courses and workshops throughout the year in a wide variety of activities including ceramics, craft, music, painting and drawing, massage, photography, study skills, car maintenance and singing. Classes cater for beginners and for those with some knowledge of the activity. Special student prices apply, and there are discounts for staff. Telephone 9905 3180 for a calendar of activities.
This is a generalist service working closely with other student services, and is available to offer assistance to students on a range of issues. If you feel that you are in a crisis, need help, need accurate information, or just need someone to talk to, come to the Student Welfare Service where we can work towards resolving whatever problems you may be experiencing.
Lot's Wife, the student newspaper at Clayton campus, is published fortnightly by MSA and accepts articles from all students. It is compiled by a team of elected editors with a lot of student helpers, and is a great opportunity to learn about all aspects of newspaper production. Students wishing to produce posters, leaflets or other publications can use the facilities in the Lot's Wife office at a nominal cost.
At Wholefoods Restaurant you can buy freshly prepared, naturally grown vegetarian food. The aim of the restaurant is to provide nutritious high-quality food at the cheapest possible price. To be able to do this, the restaurant depends on student volunteer labour. So, become involved by assisting for one hour, and earn a free lunch.
For further information about any aspect of MSA come to the office and meet your MSA representatives. The office is on the first floor of the Union building. Telephone 9905 3138.

MAPS is also concerned with employment opportunities for mature age graduates.

The postgraduate association serves the interests and welfare of postgraduates enrolled through the Clayton campus by directing its activities and projects towards their specific needs. The association represents postgraduates both collectively and individually, providing a recognised means of communication between the postgraduate body and the academic and administrative bodies of the university. This includes an advocacy role where necessary. It negotiates on behalf of members to initiate projects of ongoing benefit to them, for example the Monash Silver Jubilee Postgraduate Scholarship, the Conference Travel Fund for Postgraduates, the supervision guidelines in the PhD handbook and the computers and laser printer for postgraduates. MPA also carries out research into issues relating to postgraduate education.
The postgraduate association works cooperatively on projects with other bodies interested in postgraduate education, especially CAPA, the national postgraduate representative body.
The association ensures that there is postgraduate representation on all the university's governing bodies and committees relevant to their interests. The needs of particular sections of the postgraduate population are taken into account when planning the association's activities, for example international, part-time, female or coursework students.
The association produces the annual handbook Compass and a regular newsletter Magnet.
MPA organises seminars and workshops on topics of relevance to postgraduate education as well as social functions which bring together postgraduates from the many different disciplines within the university.
A committee of up to eighteen postgraduates is elected in the first semester of each academic year. The committee meets monthly excepting January. The association has three full-time members of staff (the executive officer, the project officer and the administrative assistant) and one part-time member of staff (the development officer, who looks after specific needs of Clayton-enrolled postgraduates who are located off-campus in various laboratories and hospitals). The committee, in consultation with the executive officer, develops policy and establishes a set of primary projects for each year. These projects are carried out by the staff of the association in general, however, committee members who wish to contribute to a particular project have the opportunity to do so. Subcommittees are formed when necessary. Individual postgraduates or groups are able to raise issues by contacting the association's office or by approaching committee members.
The Monash Postgraduate Association's office is centrally located in the Union building on the Clayton campus and is open Monday to Friday from 8.40 am to 5 pm. The four staff members are available to give confidential assistance with your inquiries. Postgraduates are encouraged to call in to the office to meet the staff and to learn more about their association. If you are not able to come into the office in person, please telephone 9905 3196 or 9905 3197 or 9905 3198.
Opposite the MPA office is the postgraduate computer room. This room is also convenient for quiet reading, using the MPA resource library, or for small group discussions. Tea, coffee and a kettle are supplied by MPA (you must bring your own cup/mug and fresh milk).
Three computers and a printer (HP Laserjet Series III) are available for postgraduate use in the computer room. The Monash University International Students Service is the division of the Monash Student Association (MSA) representing international students enrolled on the Clayton campus. Its main aim is to protect the rights of these students. MUISS also serves the interests and welfare of international students by representing them on various student association, Union, faculty and university committees, and in so doing, aims to raise the profile of international students in these important decision-making bodies. MUISS also serves the interests and welfare of international students by providing services and activities directed towards the specific needs of international students.
MUISS aims to encourage and assist interaction between local and international students through various activities such as Multicultural Week, which helps to heighten awareness of the multicultural nature of the University environment as well as to educate the Monash community and to create an atmosphere of tolerance towards the diversity of cultures on campus.
The MUISS Lounge provides international students with a variety of services. One of the most popular of these is the provision of international newspapers and magazines such as The Star (Malaysia), South China Morning Post (Hong Kong), Kompas (Indonesia), and USA Today, which can be read in comfortable surroundings. The lounge also has free tea and coffee facilities, a refrigerator and a microwave. The lounge contains a reference library providing information on such matters as obtaining tax file numbers, Medibank Private claim forms, language and learning facilities, freight services, airport transport, ambulance subscriptions, housing, student financial aid, and so on. The lounge is located on the first floor of the Union building, next to the Wholefoods Restaurant, and is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 7 pm.
The MUISS committee and staff assist in resolving education and welfare problems by providing advocacy on behalf of students either individually or as a group, and by providing a point of referral to other services within the university. MUISS keeps students informed of matters of importance arising out of the international education policies and decisions of the university, and carries out occasional research projects. MUISS works with the National Liaison Committee for International Students in Australia (NLC), which is the national representative body for the 70,000 international students in Australia. International students are assured that through the NLC they will be heard by such bodies as the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee and the Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs.
The president and other executive members of MUISS are elected annually in September; other general committee positions may be filled at a duly constituted general meeting or by cooption. International students are strongly encouraged to take an active part in MUISS, as responsible representation of students on campus is possible only where students support their representative body.
