The Union provides many non-academic services to students on the Clayton campus and offers many opportunities for students to be active in cultural, social and political groups and to develop a wide range of personal interests. The Union provides a variety of amenities and commercial services, with the main shopping complex and food services being in the Union building.
All aspects of the Union are governed by the Union Board, which consists of representatives of students, student associations and staff, and is responsible to the University Council.
The director of the Union is Mr Joe Curtis. All enrolled students are encouraged to make use of Union facilities and the university student services housed in the Union building. The main services are listed below: students are encouraged to read the 1997 Diary/Directory for more information. This guide is produced by the Union as a reference to student amenities and is designed to make students aware of the support and assistance freely available to them on campus. Further information on clubs and societies is available in the Orientation handbook.
The Union building is situated in the centre of the Clayton campus. Catering facilities are also provided below the Hargrave Library and in the Rotunda. The Union also maintains facilities at several teaching hospitals, including the Alfred Hospital and the Monash Medical Centre.
Unless otherwise indicated, the facilities listed are in the Union building on the Clayton campus.
Answers to most general inquiries may be sought at the information desk inside the main entrance. Services available at the desk include transport information, transparency copying, colour printing, copies of Monads and Daily News sheets, booking of rooms and theatres for club activities, music practice rooms, internal phone access, dentist booking phone, the tool lending library, mail and message service, change (when banks are closed), lost property, book binding and a fax service.
Located near the Union information desk, the unit offers a professional and efficient typing service to students and staff. Essays, theses, covering letters, resumes and any specialist typing work is undertaken. Telephone 9905 5109 (internal 55109).
The office, on the first floor, provides information on cultural, political, religious, faculty, music and social clubs on campus. Advice is also available on how to start a new club. Telephone 9905 4159 (internal 54159).
This is a recreational library on the first floor. Science fiction, fiction, biographies and non-fiction as well as walking guides and maps are available for borrowing, and there is also a poster-lending service. Shareware games and CD ROM games are provided for the computer enthusiast. The extensive collection of large pictorials is for browsing only. There are also daily newspapers, the latest magazines, comics and street directories. Information on courses and careers may be borrowed. There are four turntables, seven CD players, and thirty-seven individual listening posts. The music collection consists of approximately 3000 LPs and over 6000 CDs.
Monash University Radio 3MU welcomes volunteers from each campus into its operation. 3MU offers instruction and experience in various aspects of broadcasting, technical production and program development. Access to studios is at the west end of the Union building on the ground floor, opposite the Health Service. Telephone 9905 3129 (internal 53129).
Student Theatre produces between six and eight plays each year, on and off campus. It provides information on live theatre in Melbourne and on other tertiary campuses, and theatre-related activities run on campus by the four performing arts clubs that also operate at Monash. The range of activities includes workshops, student theatre productions, theatresports, playwriting competitions and the annual Festival of Student Theatre. Student Theatre introduces students and staff to the theatre network on campus, and serves as a resource for props, costumes, books, texts, scripts, acting training courses, musical instruments, mask and prop-making equipment, and stage make-up. Skilled professional theatre staff assist students in the staging of plays, and provide advice on how to create self- or group-devised work, where to get funding to help with script writing and publicity, directing, the auditioning process, acting techniques and so forth. The staff work alongside a committee of students, staff and theatre industry representatives. This committee meets regularly, and determines budget spending and theatre directions for the following year. Elections for the Student Theatre Committee are held annually.
The theatre and the theatre performance and rehearsal area, on the ground floor, are available to campus groups for live theatre production and performance and film screenings. A subsidised service is available for Monash students. Please check the address of the clinic when you make your booking. A special telephone link is located at the information desk. ID is required. There is a charge per visit, payable at the time of the appointment and, normally, no refund on cancellations.
Located next to the Post Office, northern extension of the building, this service is open Monday to Thursday 9 am - 12 noon and 2 pm - 4.30 pm, and Friday 9 am - 12 noon and 2 pm - 3 pm. Academic dress may be hired or purchased.
The main food service on campus is a Union facility provided by the catering department of the university Union. The department has a staff of 120 and an annual turnover in the vicinity of $5 million. It generally operates on a break-even basis but, if surpluses occur, they are fed back into Union funds.
Catering outlets include the Deli, the Small Caf, the Silly Sausage, the West End Cafe, the Main Dining Room, the Espresso Bar, the Banquet Room (providing traditional Malaysian and Chinese dishes), Happies' Chinese Take-away, and the Cellar Room (where salads and hot vegetarian meals are sold by weight). Renovations to the Union building will include a pizza area and a bistro and student bar in 1997. There is a coffee cart in the foyer of the Menzies building. Union catering also operates the Hargrave Cafeteria and the Rotunda Theatre Kiosk. Please check your Diary/Directory for operating times for each of these locations.
The catering department also caters for conventions, providing registration coffee, morning and afternoon teas, lunches and dinners, and private functions such as twenty-first birthday parties and wedding receptions. Upon request, the department will provide food, beverages and service in buildings other than the Union building. Telephone 9905 3169 (internal 53169).
The Agency, open between 8.45 am and 5 pm, is located on the ground floor of the Union building, next to the Shop, and offers Tattslotto, drycleaning, shoe repairs and key cutting.
Flippers games room is located on the ground floor of the Union building.
The Billiard Room, located downstairs from the Cellar Room in the Union building, is open between 10 am and 4.30 pm during semester.
Located on the ground floor of the Union building, opposite the new Bistro, the Pantry stocks a broad range of vitamins and health products. It is open from 9 am to 5 pm.
Located on the ground floor of the Union building, between the Westpac Bank and the Bookshop, the Music Store stocks CDs, cassettes, T-shirts and other goods. It is open from 9 am to 5 pm.
Located on the ground floor of the Union building, opposite the Agency and the Shop, the Resource Room caters for all your photocopying and document requirements.
The Shop stocks a large selection of Monash logo mementos and clothing, Australian souvenirs and assorted gift items. There are also essential grocery items, confectionery, snack food and imported chocolates, cigarettes, phone cards, Met tickets, discounted movie tickets and umbrellas. The Shop is open during semester from 8.30 am to 5 pm, and during semester break from 9 am to 5 pm.
The clinic is located near the Union information desk in the Union building. The optometrist provides a full range of services related to vision and general eyecare including disease screening. Glasses and contact lenses are available through the clinic. Consultations are bulk-billed through Medicare. For an appointment, telephone 9905 2086 (internal 52086).
In the northern extension, this is an official Post Office, offering a full range of postal services, including Registered Post, Domestic and International, Express Post (local and interstate) and International Express Post, and a full range of Postpak material and first-day-of-issue facilities. Applications for Australian passports are accepted. Payments for Telstra, Optus, Melbourne Water and all energy accounts, Department of Planning and Development and ambulance subscriptions are accepted. It is also an agency for the Commonwealth Savings Bank with keycard and passbook facilities, and provides card access to the Bank of Melbourne and Citibank. A fax service within Australia and overseas is available. The Post Office is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
Situated in the Union building on the ground floor, the pharmacy offers full dispensary and pharmaceutical services, together with a comprehensive cosmetic range including French perfume, general perfume and men's toiletries. Passport photographs, also suitable for visas and international ID cards, are available while you wait. Speedy film processing is available - select from Kodak or Topshot processors. An on-site laminating service for posters, photographs, degrees, documents etc. is also provided. Phone cards are sold. The pharmacy is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm and on all days throughout the university year when the university is open. Bankcard and international credit card facilities are available through EFTPOS facility with optional cash-out.
A unisex hair salon is located on the ground floor next to the Commonwealth Bank. It specialises in all aspects of hair care and ear piercing. The salon is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9 am to 5.30 pm; Thursday 9 am to 7 pm. Telephone 9905 4155 (internal 54155).
The Credit Union is a bank-alternative financial institution that serves students and staff on all post-secondary campuses throughout Victoria (with the exception of Melbourne and La Trobe universities): the Clayton branch is located in the Union building. To become a member you buy five $2 shares and may remain a member for life if you so wish, or redeem your shares at any time. As a member, you are offered a range of savings accounts, loans at competitive rates, cheque accounts, and the widely accepted ATM and EFTPOS card - the Redicard. Also available are insurance packages with monthly premium payments, travel and investment advice, and the free Home Banking Service by which members can access their accounts twenty-four hours a day. The branch on Clayton campus, open Monday to Friday, offers the full range of services, including loans, from 9 am to 5 pm. Tellers close at 4 pm. Telephone 9905 4130; fax 9905 51105. There is an agency on the Peninsula campus operating from the Student Union.
Branches of Westpac Banking Corporation and the Commonwealth Bank have complete banking facilities. A Commonwealth Bank agency is operated through the post office, and a NAB automatic teller is located in the Union building.
STA Travel is on the ground floor of the Union building. All students, academics and general staff are eligible to use the facilities: competitive air fares, travel insurance, accommodation, car hire and package tours. International Student Identity Card (ISIC) and Student Work Abroad Program (SWAP) are also available. The academic travel coordinator provides personalised, professional travel service for academics only.
