Transport and parking

Parking and traffic control

While you are on campus you are governed by all normal road rules. The speed limit is clearly indicated by signage on all campuses. Parking tickets are issued by the university, but you should treat any ticket you may get as if it were issued by your local city council - you can get into serious trouble if you don't pay the fine. If you think you have a good reason why you shouldn't have received the ticket, you can appeal it through the Security and Parking Office (Clayton), or the parking administration officers at Caulfield and Peninsula campuses. Students can appeal against parking infringements at the Gippsland campus by contacting the Property Office at Gippsland.

Parking permits

Berwick

There will be no parking restrictions on the Berwick campus in 1997.

Clayton

Applications for mail-ordered permits are available from late 1996 until sold out from the Security and Traffic building (behind the Education building) and the Services Branch office, Works and Services building, Ring Road North. Completed application forms, along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope and payment, should be sent to `1997 Parking Permits, Services Branch, Monash University, Wellington Road, Clayton 3168' during the period specified. Applications will not be accepted outside this period. Payment may be made by bank cheque, personal cheque or money order made payable to Monash University. Cash and credit cards are not accepted. If sent through the internal mail system, a stamped envelope need not be enclosed. Permits are processed and mailed prior to the first day of semester.

All parking at Clayton campus, including gravel areas, is by permit only between 8 am and 4 pm. Parking on campus is colour coded, and you must park in the area that matches the colour of your permit: blue permits are available for purchase by students. Free parking is available at the old drive-in site at the corner of Wellington and Blackburn Roads (see Clayton campus map).

Caulfield

Permits are issued around January of the relevant year. Inquiries should be directed to Buildings and Services on (03) 9903 2061.

Gippsland

There are approximately 1300 free car parking spaces available at Gippsland.

Parkville

There is no student parking on campus. Ample street parking is available, subject to parking meters and time restrictions.

Peninsula

There are 300 permit spaces available to students. There is a metered area with a two-hour limit, and there is unrestricted parking on the southern part of the campus. For permit availability details contact campus administration on 9904 4000.

Alternative transportation

As well as driving to Monash, there are alternative forms of transportation to each campus. You can ride your bike (bring a lock for it), hitchhike (there are authorised hitching points at Clayton), car-pool (contact MSA at Clayton, Student Union reception at Caulfield, and A building, ground floor, at Peninsula or MUBS at Berwick), or use public transport.

Berwick campus is adjacent to the Berwick railway station on the Dandenong-Pakenham line.

Clayton campus has a reasonable bus service from most of Melbourne, and a good train service on the Glen Waverley and Dandenong-Pakenham lines (with a bus to the campus from the station). Transport information and timetables for the Clayton campus are available at the Union desk.

Caulfield campus is served by train, tram and bus, all readily accessible and frequent in operation.

Gippsland campus is served by buses and inter-city rail connections. (Morwell Railway Station).

Parkville campus is served by trams travelling along Elizabeth Street and Royal Parade. Royal Park railway station is less than a kilometre away on the Flinders Street-Upfield line.

Peninsula campus has a frequent train service to Frankston railway station and regular bus services from the station to the campus. There is also a train service to Leawarra railway station on the south eastern corner of the campus.

Travel concessions

Travel concessions from the Met and V-Line systems are available to students who are Australian residents and studying, full-time, a course which is Austudy eligible. This means that concessions are available to students working on their first undergraduate degree or diploma course but not to candidates for masters or PhDs. Overseas students whether full- or part-time are not eligible for these concessions. Applications are available from the Met and V-Line offices and from student administration. Two passport photographs are required for the concession card, and it has to be approved (and stamped) at Student Services.

Pharmacy college students may obtain concession application forms for the Met and V-Line from reception, ground floor, Sissons building. Forms are approved and stamped at the registrar's office. Air travel concession forms, which are to be obtained from airline offices, are also approved by the registrar.

It is not a Monash University policy which prevents overseas and higher degree students from obtaining concessions. It is a Government decision, and students who feel it is unfair should contact the Australian and Victorian ministers for education and transport to voice their objections. The policy is `under review.'

Air travel concessions are also available for full-time students under twenty-six years of age (Ansett and Australian Airlines). Applications are available at the airline offices or at the student travel office. Overseas students can apply for concessions on overseas travel to return home after at least one year of study. Applications are available at the student travel office. At Gippsland, air travel concessions are available from the Student Union office.

Other types of travel also offer concessions. Ask the travel company offices whether they offer any, and whether groups are eligible for a discount if you plan to organise a trip.
