The Monash University Library provides resources to support the teaching and research programs of the university. The library comprises the four libraries at the Clayton campus; Sir Louis Matheson Library (humanities and social sciences Library), the Hargrave Library (physical sciences, engineering, computing), the Law Library and the Biomedical Library; the two libraries on the Caulfield and Peninsula campuses and the Gippsland Library at the Gippsland campus. As well as the seven major libraries there are the sub-branch libraries in the Music department, the Business and Economics faculty and at the Alfred Hospital. There are affiliated libraries in the Monash Medical Centre at Clayton and Moorabbin, and at the Box Hill Hospital. In its seven libraries the Monash University Library has a book stock of approximately two million volumes and subscribes to over 18,000 periodicals.
The Monash University Library is centrally administered by the university librarian from the Sir Louis Matheson Library at Clayton. Each branch library is managed by a branch librarian. The Gippsland Library is managed by the associate librarian (Gippsland).
Because of the interdisciplinary nature of many courses you may find material relevant to your studies in more than one branch of the Monash University Library.
Monash University Library has a home page on the Internet at http://www.monash.edu.au/library/. This page provides links to electronic services, and links to each of the branch libraries' home pages.
Students are provided with two separate library resources. In the university building an electronic library provides computer access to reserve material such as journal articles, specified readings and lecture notes. A collection of texts, specialising in communications, tourism and business, is being built up at Berwick. For borrowing books, students have access to the library in the Casey Institute of TAFE (opposite the campus). Telephone 9904 7014.
The Monash University Library Telephone Enquiry Service (MUTELS) handles inquiries from 9 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday for all libraries and will refer calls appropriately. Telephone 9905 5054.

At every library there is an information desk staffed by a team of subject/reference librarians who specialise in particular subject areas. These librarians are your contact in the library and they should be approached if you need help in finding information or instruction on the use of the library and its resources.
The library has user education programs which include library tours, orientation and information finding classes using the computer catalogue SESAME2 and CD-ROM databases. Information regarding the user education programs is available at the information desk at any of the libraries.
If you have difficulty with any aspect of library use either in understanding how the library operates, or in seeking out the information you need, you should not hesitate to inquire at the information desk at any of the libraries.
Monash University Library's online catalogue provides information on the holdings of all eight Monash University Library site libraries.
As well as providing the locations of material in the various Monash University libraries, SESAME2 enables you to check the current status of any item. The system allows you to renew loans, to place `holds' on some material shown to be out on loan and it lets you access your personal loan record - an essential feature for your information to ensure you do not accrue penalty points.
Detailed brochures on the use and features of SESAME2 are available at any of the libraries.
All students have access to and may borrow from any Monash University library. Simply present your ID card and the item you wish to borrow at the loans desk. Loans can only be issued to you using your current student ID.
Undergraduate students may have up to six items on loan at any one time. In this total only three items can be short-term loan items. Two items can be borrowed from reserve. The standard loan period for books is seven days and for short loans it is one to three days depending on the library. Reserve material can be borrowed for one to two hours depending on the library. Serials are not available for loan to undergraduates.
Postgraduate students are entitled to more extensive loan privileges. Details are available at the branch libraries.
Distance education students may borrow in person from any of the Monash libraries or borrow through Gippsland Library's off-campus borrowing service. For more information on these services, consult the Gippsland Library's guide for distance education students.
All books must be returned to the library by library closing time on or before their date due. A university-wide penalty points system is in operation and library users who return books late will accrue penalty points which accumulate over the year. Borrowing privileges are suspended automatically with overdue items, and fines are incurred. When the number of points accumulated exceeds 999, the points are converted into an equivalent cash amount. Points accumulate at the rate of one point for one cent, therefore 1000 points = $10.
The rate at which points are accumulated per item for each day that the item is overdue, varies; particularly for some books or other library materials that are in heavy demand. A bookmark/leaflet explaining the penalty points and late fees system in more detail is available at any branch library.
Monash University Library can provide access to a wide range of Australian and overseas databases both online and on CD-ROM. Such searches are efficient and time-saving ways to search the literature of a particular subject field. The end result is a list of references tailored to your topic. CD-ROMs are computer-readable compact discs of data. Most CD-ROMs can be consulted free of charge although charges apply for printing. The library has over forty different CD-ROM products with some (in the areas of business and computing) providing full text retrieval.
The CD-ROM network allows for simultaneous multi-use access to a high proportion of the CD-ROM products from workstations that are connected to the network. Workstations are available for student use in the branch libraries: twelve in the Sir Louis Matheson Library, thirteen in the Biomedical Library, eight in the Hargrave Library, eight in the Caulfield campus library, and eight in the Gippsland campus library. CD-ROM network access is also available from twenty-four PCs at Berwick.
A number of the CD-ROMs held by the library are available on the network and others are available on a single-user-at-a-time basis. A booking must be made to use the single-use CD-ROMs; bookings are not required for networked CD-ROMs. Ask at the information desk about where to book and how to use the CD-ROMs.
Online searches are normally not free, as the costs of these searches are passed on to the user. To discover if there are relevant CD-ROMs for your studies, or to discuss the appropriateness of an online search for your topic and the likely cost (if any), contact a subject librarian.
Monash University Library offers a comprehensive range of off-campus library services through the Gippsland Library. This service is designed primarily to accommodate the needs of distance education students who for a number of reasons are unable to use any of the Monash University libraries in person. Off-campus library services include: off-campus borrowing, literature searches to find relevant books and journal articles, photocopying and dial-up access to CD-ROM databases. For more details telephone (051) 22 6313 or 9902 6313; (outside 03 or 051 zones, telephone 1800 331 194); fax (051) 22 6882 or 9902 6882.
The library provides a variety of services for students with disabilities. For assistance or information about this service inquire in person or by telephone to the information desk at any branch library.
