Biotechnology is an exciting area of interdisciplinary research and development activity. The course consists of a compulsory core of subjects which comprise microbiology, biochemistry and applied chemistry. Together, these subjects cover basic microbiological techniques, recombinant DNA technology, natural products chemistry, principles of modern instrumentation, industrial operations and process control, industrial fermentation, biological control, waste management and monitoring, experimental design and data analysis.

Students also have the opportunity to pursue an independent research project or to spend a period of time in an appropriate industrial setting. There is an emphasis on practical work, where students receive `hands-on' training using modern instrumentation.

Course requirements

Within the BAppSc regulations, students complete the applied chemistry major sequence plus subjects GAS1185, GAS1186, GAS1383, GAS2121, GAS2122, GAS2141, GAS2142, GAS3121, GAS3142.

Note: of the twenty-four points of electives, at least twelve points must be at second or third levels.
