This is a laboratory-based course with major studies in microbiology and biochemistry, complemented by minor studies in cell biology, human biology, instrumental science, analytical chemistry, mathematics and computing. Students receive a thorough grounding in basic biochemical and microbiological techniques, the biological actions of macromolecules; cultivation, handling, identification and control of microorganisms and cellular metabolism. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in a variety of industrial and government settings, particularly where priority is given to medical research and diagnosis.

Course requirements

Within the BAppSc regulations, students complete the biochemistry and microbiology major sequences plus subjects GAS1281, GAS1282, GAS1383, GAS2281, GAS2282.

Note: of the twenty-four points of electives, at least twelve points must be at second or third-year levels.
