Information centre/library management

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to comprehend the general principles of organisational and management theory as it relates to managing a library or other service centres within a broad organisational environment; plan, develop, implement and evaluate services within a discrete department or centre; undertake financial planning and manage a budget; appreciate the broad principles of personnel management and apply these to a specific organisation; and comprehend, apply and integrate various curriculum and learning principles such as resource-based learning into a school program.

Synopsis General theoretical management theories and principles will be introduced to provide a conceptual framework within which contemporary management issues such as total quality management, strategic planning and managing innovation within a change environment will be addressed. The subject will focus on the theory, strategies and practical mechanisms relating to personnel management, financial management including services provision within resource constraints. Strategies relating to marketing, implementing, promoting and integrating information services into the school's curriculum will be described and evaluated. Reporting, accountability and evaluation techniques including performance indicators and other assessment appraisal tools will be demonstrated. Each of these issues will also be reviewed and analysed in relation to virtual libraries and virtual information centres.
