Foundations of school librarianship

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an awareness of the historical development of various types of libraries, especially school libraries; analysed the roles and functions of school libraries and other information agencies; assessed the relationship between the school libraries and other information agencies; identified types of services offered by library and information agencies with emphasis on services to be offered by school libraries; assessed the factors, especially social and educational trends, in relationships to the development of school libraries and the roles of the teacher-librarians; assessed the roles of library associations.

Synopsis This subject aims to develop an awareness of the historical development of various types of libraries and information agencies, and especially school libraries. Topics covered include the roles and functions of school libraries and other information agencies; the relationships between school libraries and other information agencies; the types of services offered by library and information agencies with emphasis on services offered by school libraries; the social, technological and educational trends in relation to the development of school libraries and the roles of teacher-librarians; the roles of library associations.

Assessment Written report (1500 words): 40%
* Essay (4000 words): 60%
