Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have a clear understanding of the nature of information within an educational and information centre context; an appreciation of the development of libraries and other information centres within and beyond Australia; recognise the diverse roles of libraries and other information centres within educational and other environments; and comprehend the role of governments and key lobby groups such as professional associations play in fostering and developing information centres.
Synopsis This subject commences with a definition of information, followed by the concept of a global information world and the ramifications entailed within this. A broad historical overview of the development of information centres, focussing initially on libraries and then a review of other specialised or contemporary information centres including virtual centres available through the Internet will be offered before analysing the changing, adaptive roles and function to libraries and other information centres. This subject will clearly signal and demonstrate that information centres and the services they offer are an integral component of the community or environment within which they operate. A broad overview of the role of professional associations in promoting and fostering information services will be included.
