Creating theatre for children

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to describe a process for creating an innovative script for child audiences; have created music, movement, special effects and events as needed by the project; understand the fundamentals of stage presentation; be able to create and administer survey instruments appropriate to children; have experienced performing to an audience in a solo capacity as well as part of an ensemble; evaluate the effectiveness of their production to the audience and to their own professional development.
Synopsis In this subject students will create, administer and interpret a survey for primary school aged children to establish current child theatrical preferences. Using this data as market research, students will create and perform a play, presenting it in a theatre for a large child audience. The performance will be evaluated by the child audience. Students will use the two sets of data to evaluate the content and values in current television offerings for children.
Assessment Performance: 60%
