Music performance in contemporary society

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to read music; be able to perform simple pieces on a number of varied instruments, including tuned handbells and classroom instruments; demonstrate an improved understanding of musical concepts basic to contemporary, popular, classical and world musics; show a commitment to the co-operative nature of group performance.

Synopsis Students will participate in practical activities relating to the keyboard, the instrumental ensemble, computer music in the multimedia laboratory and handbells. (1) Practical: students either follow a basic keyboard course or participate in an approved ensemble. Advanced students may be able to arrange credit for instrumental lessons taken outside the university. (2) Handbell ensemble: musical concepts are explored through performing a varied repertoire of music played on tuned handbells. (3) Instrument workshop: students are introduced to a wide range of repertoire of Western and non-Western musics in various styles through computer-aided performance and by playing school classroom and orchestral instruments and through the voice.

Assessment Keyboard test: 40%
* Practical performance test: 40%
* Class Test: 20%
