Course outline

The Bachelor of Primary and Secondary Education contains three interrelated components - general studies, education studies, and curriculum and teaching studies.

General studies

General studies are intended to extend the education of students and to give them a deeper understanding of the subjects which they are studying with a view to becoming teachers of these subjects in primary and secondary schools. These studies are undertaken in the schools of Social Sciences, Applied Science, Business and Art.

Education studies

Education studies provide the basis of students' understanding of children, learning, teaching, the nature of education and its relationship to society, and curriculum design, implementation and evaluation.

Teaching and curriculum studies

Teaching and curriculum studies familiarise students with the planning, implementation and evaluation of the school curriculum in mathematics, language, social studies, science, music, art, physical education, information studies and LOTE. These subjects include supervised teaching experience in schools and related teaching studies.

Majors and submajors available

A major consists of a minimum of eight subjects in one subject area; a submajor comprises a minimum of six subjects in one subject area. The selection of nineteen general studies subjects must include at least two and not more than five subject areas. Students taking the secondary option must complete either (i) (two) majors, and three other subjects or (ii) one major, one submajor, and five other subjects. In the case of studying a major a maximum of four subjects at first-year level are permitted. A minimum of two third-year level subjects must be passed. In the case of a submajor a maximum of two first-year level subjects is permitted. A minimum of two third-year level subjects is required. Students taking the primary option must complete a major of eight subjects - ie build on the submajor (six subjects) completed in the Bachelor of Teaching.

Subjects offered by other schools

School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Majors and submajors are available in English, history/politics, Australian studies, community studies, gender studies, Indonesian, mass communications, sociology and psychology. History and politics can be combined with sociology to make up a social science major.

Majors and submajors are available in physics, chemistry and biology (Group 1); and in mathematics (pure and applied, and statistics), computing, and operations research and information management (Group 2). In all cases, if a submajor is elected, one subject only may be studied. If a major of eight or more subjects is studied then a combination of two out of the three in Group 1 is allowable and a similar combination permitted for Group 2. Students considering a submajor in mathematics are advised to follow the study plan set out under the section on the multidisciplinary Bachelor of Applied Science. A double major in three subjects from either group is permitted subject to course adviser approval.

School of Business
