The course

The preservice Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a four-year full-time concurrent course for the preparation of secondary teachers, company trainers and, depending on major studies chosen, other professionals requiring an academic background in the sciences, humanities or business studies. The degree comprises thirty subjects. Eight of these are professional subjects and twenty-two are general studies subjects approved for degree purposes. Candidates for this degree may study full-time on campus or by distance education.

Majors and submajors available

A major consists of a minimum of eight subjects in one subject area; a submajor comprises a minimum of six subjects in one subject area. All students complete an eight-subject major in education composed of:

The selection of twenty-two general studies subjects must include at least two and not more than five subject areas. Students must complete either (i) two majors, and six other subjects or (ii) one major, two submajors and two other subjects. In the case of studying a major, a maximum of four subjects at first-year level is permitted. A minimum of two third-year level subjects must be passed. In the case of a submajor a maximum of two first-year level subjects is permitted. A minimum of two third-year level subjects is required. However, all students should plan the details of their course structure with the student adviser. Students may select general studies subjects (subject to course eligibility) offered by the schools of Social Science, Applied Science, Business and Visual Arts. Majors and submajors may be selected from different schools provided that (a) at least two and not more than five subject areas are studied, (b) students complete either (i) two eight-subject majors (and any six other subjects) or (ii) one eight-subject major, two six-subject submajors (and any two other subjects).

Subject areas offered by other schools

School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Majors and submajors are available in English, history/politics, and sociology. History and politics can be combined with sociology to make up a social science major. Psychology should not be taken beyond the submajor without prior permission from the course adviser.

School of Applied Science

Majors and submajors are available in physics, chemistry, biology and psychology (Group 1); and in mathematics (pure and applied, and statistics), computing, operations research and information management (Group 2). In all cases, if a submajor is elected, one subject only may be studied. If a major of eight or more subjects is studied then a combination of two out of the three in Group 1 is allowable and a similar combination permitted for Group 2. Students considering a submajor in mathematics are advised to follow the study plan set out under the section on the multidisciplinary Bachelor of Applied Science. A double major in three subjects from either group is permitted subject to course adviser approval.

School of Business

Majors and submajors are available in economics and accounting. Submajors are available in law, marketing, management and tourism management. If a submajor is elected, one subject only may be studied for that submajor. If a major is elected then a combination of two subjects is permissible. A double major of three subjects may be studied subject to course adviser approval.

School of Visual Arts

The subject areas available include foundation studies in 2D and 3D; studios in painting, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture; and history and theory of art. Majors are available in all studios after completion of foundation studies. A submajor in history and theory of art can be studied independently of foundation studies and studios (but will not be accepted as a teaching subject by the Victorian Department of Education). With the exception of history and theory of art subjects, all other studies in visual arts require the approval of the student/course advisers for both the School of Visual Arts and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Initial requests should be lodged with the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) course adviser.

In all cases, students are responsible for ensuring that they have the pre and/or corequisites for the subjects they propose to study. This is a particularly important matter when it comes to choosing upper level subjects. Students may be able to count certain studies from other campuses of Monash University as well as other universities towards their Bachelor of Education (Secondary), eg studies in classical and modern languages, philosophy, geography etc. Advice on how to proceed on this is available from the student administration office, Gippsland School of Education (telephone 9902 6375) and the course adviser.
