The Bachelor of Education (School Librarianship) caters for two major
categories of students: qualified teachers wishing to become librarians, and
those wishing to upgrade or to obtain a further qualification. A Diploma of
Teaching, Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Education or equivalent is required
for entry. The course has been accredited by the Australian Library and
Information Association.
Students are required to complete the following subjects:
First semester
- GEC4421 Literature in education
- GEC7220 Foundations of school librarianship
Second semester
- GEC7230 Administration and organisation of the resource centre
- GEC7240 Curriculum planning and resources
Full year
- GEC7280 School librarianship professional development[*]
First semester
- GEC7250 Information needs and users
- GEC7260 Organisation of information
Second semester
- GEC4438 Language and learning
- GEC7270 Computer-supported information services
Full year
- GEC7290 School librarianship practicum*
Subjects GEC7280 and GEC7290
are compulsory for all students and no student will be able to complete the
qualification without having met the requirements. Students will be required to
undertake ten different professional activities for subject GEC7280 and twenty
days of supervised practical experience for subject GEC7290 in a library
staffed by a trained, experienced librarian approved by the campus's
librarianship staff.
[*] Those students requiring other
professional or general studies subjects to complete their courses should take
these subjects concurrently with school librarianship subjects.
