Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have an understanding of the procedures required to ensure the successful implementation of a computerised information management system in an organisation, including evaluating the organisations needs, selecting a system which satisfies those requirements, and installing and implementing the system. They should also have an appreciation of a range of information systems, integrated library systems, records and document management packages, decision-support systems, executive information systems and intranets.
Synopsis This subject is intended to provide an outline of the procedures required to ensure the successful implementation of a computerised system. Aspects covered in the subject include evaluating the requirements of an organisation, selection of a system which satisfies those requirements, building or purchasing the system, and the installation and implementation of the system. The role of the system consultant in assisting with these procedures will be discussed. A range of information systems are considered: integrated library systems, records and document management packages, decision-support systems, executive information systems and intranets. Special attention is given to user interfaces, migrating to new systems and the management information that systems can provide. It is assumed that students enrolling for the subject will have an understanding of the basics of library and records management automation.
