Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt

Objectives Upon completion of the subject students will have undertaken an in depth study of the heterogeneous nature of Egyptian culture during the rule of the Macedonian Ptolemies and Rome, with particular emphasis on multi-culturalism.

Synopsis The subject examines the profound changes the culture of ancient Egypt underwent during the period from 332 BCE to the end of the fourth century CE. It will examine the interaction between the Greek-speaking elite and the indigenous population, and will draw upon and analyse a wide range of sources, from the archaeological to the papyrological and literary. It includes a study of the advent of christianity in Egypt.

Assessment third year Tutorial essay (1500 words): 25%
* Essay (2500 words) 35%
* Examination (2 hours): 40%

Assessment fourth year Two essays (3000 words each): 100%
* Honours students will be directed to additional, guided reading which will furnish the basis for differential assessment.
