Prerequisites: CBL1110
Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have developed a practical knowledge of simple grammatical structures; skills to read short simple texts in Chinese; the ability to write short notes and compositions in Chinese characters and an initial understanding of the necessity to translate contextually rather than literally.
Synopsis Elementary spoken and written Chinese; short simple readings; classroom discussions of translations; discussion of aspects of Chinese culture relevant to the use of language.
Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 50%
* Weekly assignments: 20%
* Aural/oral tests: 30%
