Objectives On completion of this subject students should have developed a mastery of the standard modern Chinese system of phonetics; a knowledge of the principles of the structure and stroke order of Chinese characters enabling writing of the most frequently used words; the ability to communicate verbally with a limited vocabulary.

Synopsis Modern standard Chinese phonetics and romanisation; Chinese character stroke order; elementary spoken and written Chinese.

Assessment Two examinations (2 hours each): 50%
* Weekly assignments: 20%
* Aural/oral tests: 30%
